In this Episode of Habi Hour, we put the spotlight on our learners!
It’s been a year since we’ve explored new ways of teaching and learning and we’ve heard many stories of how teachers have creatively adjusted to the new normal but have you ever wondered how students are navigating this new learning set-up?
Let’s join Amiel, one of Habi LXDs, as he highlights our learners’ unique stories on their experiences with distance learning.

Introductions and Check In
[Name introductions of students]
Celina (voice over): In the past 12 episodes of Habi Hour’s Turo-Turo Serye, we’ve been talking to different teachers from different contexts. Now, let’s shake things up a little by talking to our students and our learners.
Jude: We’re gonna do online learning.
Emma: Virtually attending school
Fidel: And we do online classes everyday
Yang: Doing remote learning for 2 semesters now
Frances: And we will still do online learning.
Celina (voice over): Kuwentuhang remote learning at study-from-home. Tara, kuwentuhan tayo!
[Habi Hour intro music]
In this episode of our Turo-Turo Serye, ipasa naman natin ang spotlight.
Emma: Once the online learning began, I had a hard time adjusting to this kind of set up.
Yang: One of my struggles with remote learning is drowning in digital resources. There are just too many videos to watch and files to download.
Mike: I will never forget 2020 because COVID 19 happened and the semester was disrupted. We were in survival mode. It was an extraordinarily challenging time for all of us. Now as a student I remember to feel so stressed, overwhelmed, confused and anxious and sometimes a combination of all those feelings at once.
Amiel (voice over): Totoo!
From face-to-face to remote learning
Amiel (voice over): Ano ba ang mga nabago nang face to face pa ang klase ninyo tapos naging remote learning?
Raina: Before when I was still in Junior HS I didn’t spend a lot of time studying the lessons but now I am spending a week for one chemistry lesson only. Imagine the difference, I feel like ¾ of my day is spent on studying and the remaining ¼ is for sleeping.
Frances: Before when we were still in face to face classes I would always procrastinate and cram my works but changes to online class I would do it ahead of time so that my works would not file up and it would also give me time to relax and do other things that make me happy such as baking, cooking and playing the instruments.
Ela: I always find myself to be an auditory learner. Like before I rarely rely on loads and readings as long as my teachers had explained it to me in class. During times when we’ve to learn independently I would take really a long time to absorb information because I had to take the time to read the whole thing to myself out loud a couple of times. Since we moved online along with how rarely we have asynchronous classes. I’ve also had to take up more responsibility at home and there just wasn’t enough time to read every single thing to myself out loud.
JayQ: When I was in grade two I listened to my teachers, studied well and did my class activities in seesaw. I also tried to do my test on my own.
Unlearning in remote learning
Mike: I needed to unlearn the idea of my control issues and to accept that learning online measures as a blossoming of the flower so letting go of control give me the chance to collaborate with my classmates so that we can build a community of learners, lifting each other and helping each other to succeed.
Kaybee: This year, we used DT mindset and tools in preparing school wide events. We had to unlearn some default processes like quickly jumping off to filling out action plans and executing them.
Chris: This year, instead of sitting and writing my goals I created a vision board so that I could see exactly what and how much I plan to accomplish
Lucas: I took journals and wrote what’s one thing I should improve on and what’s 1 thing I should stop doing is because to motivate myself to do better
Managing remote learning tasks
Raina: I changed my body clock and I got strict on managing my time because aside from being a student I have a lot of responsibilities as well.
Emma: What helped me eventually was writing things down in a planner so I can visually see when things are due and what it is actually due
Joey: I made sure to maximize the use of Google Calendar because through Google Calendar I can actually organize the requirements that I need to finish.
Developing focus and getting tasks done
Quiniana: When other people are making a lot of noise then I won’t hear a thing from them because of my noise cancelling headset I can only hear my teachers and the discussion.
Kalel: I still wear a uniform even in online class.
Fidel: Iniiwasan ko or tinatanggal ko ang mga tabs na nakabukas doon ang mga social media sites na makakapagdistract sa akin and iniiwan ko lang either Spotify of Youtube at nagpapatugtog ako ng any calming music. And I think it is better na makapagbreak ka like every one hour or every two hours para hindi ka natetempt in the middle of the studying na magbukas ng other sites.
Akisha: I stay persistent in learning. I assure myself not to procrastinate and to pass my work on time. Self discipline is a key to success.
Realizations from remote learning
Amiel (voice over): Marami mang adjustments ang mga estudyante natin this past year, marami rin silang natutunan at na-realize mula sa experiences nila sa remote learning.
Ela: I’ve trained myself to process written words quicker and utilize note taking to make studying more efficient for me. I’ve realized now that learning how to do this would benefit me once I started working because I won’t always have someone there to explain things to me word for word.
Quiniana: I really like my school set up. It is clear and simple and I can write on my table perfectly.
Kaybee: By applying DT, our team found a joyful process of creative collaboration that energized us. And I am happy that they really liked it.
Kaye: I sing, I dance I listened to teacher, I had fun!
Synthesis
Sabi nga nila “Different strokes, for different folks.” Walang tama o maling sagot!
