Digital Tayo Teachers Course Packs

As the world becomes more reliant on technology, digital literacy and citizenship are key competencies that all individuals need to thrive. Teachers are in a unique position to enhance Filipino digital culture and society by becoming models and ambassadors of good digital citizenship. We worked with Facebook and teachers of Educational Technology to create the Digital Tayo course packs, teaching guides aligned with the outcomes in three Educational Technology subjects for pre-service teachers.

Educational Technology and Teacher Education in the Philippines

In 2017, the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) released new Policy Standards and Guidelines that specified the core competencies expected of students in teacher education courses. This led to the creation of new Educational Technology (EdTech) subjects in the teacher education curriculum.  From interviews, surveys, and FGDs with teachers, students, and policymakers, we learned that not all schools had fully adapted the new curricula. There is also a mismatch between the technology available to schools and the content in the curriculum. Achieving the outcomes vary across teacher education institutions but the end goal remains the same: EdTech instructors aspire to produce digitally literate and capable teacher-technologists who can purposefully integrate technology into their pedagogy and maximize technology for inclusive and accessible learning.

Made for teachers by teachers

Project-Based Learning (PBL) was chosen as the central framework for the course packs. In PBL, learners are asked to create projects that respond to real problems that they would encounter in their professions. The projects would become a springboard for achieving the learning outcomes and developing the knowledge, skills, and attitudes integral to their profession. Using PBL also ensured that the course packs are flexible enough to allow for customization and ownership of the learning experience. This would encourage use from higher education instructors, who are typically given the autonomy to develop syllabi and materials for their subject. We worked with EdTech teachers, students, and advocates from different parts of the Philippines to determine the different features of the course pack and to develop the initial prototypes. The project guides that we developed with our co-designers included the following features:
  • A learning journey that estimated the amount of time needed to accomplish the project;
  • The outcomes that each project intended to achieve;
  • Sample rubrics and projects, and models of exemplary work to help teachers assess student output;
  • Sample activities that teachers could incorporate into the learning journey to support students in achieving the learning outcomes;
  • Supplementary resources and references that teachers could explore, including modules from Facebook’s Digital Tayo platform.
We aimed for these features to help teachers easily integrate the course packs into their own subjects and customize the learning journey depending on their particular contexts.  We also learned that EdTech instructors usually have varying levels of teaching experience and expertise. We also included primers on LX Design, PBL, and remote teaching to support the use of the course packs and make them easier to integrate in the classroom.  The final course packs contain 9 project guides (three for each subject), topic-specific activity guides that could be used independently, and 3 primers. Widening the reach of the course packs The course pack was launched in a private Facebook group in June 2020. Since then, the course pack has been downloaded at least 300 times, not counting direct peer-sharing via e-mail or personal messaging. As of writing, we are trying to widen the reach of the course packs in hopes of obtaining endorsement from CHED. We are currently collecting stories of change from users of the course packs.
